# members.update_role

Change a member's role in an organization

Scope: organization_members:write. Kind: write. Acts on: organization.

Moves one member between `owner`, `admin`, `coach` and `applicant`. Owners and admins may call it, but only an owner may promote somebody to owner or change an existing owner, so an admin cannot demote the person who created the organization. Promoting an applicant to staff frees the applicant seat they were using; demoting a staff member to applicant takes one. Read `members.list` first for the `mem_…` id.
